Making Christmas Bright
OK, so I'm not in the Christmas spirit.
But I'm going to try.
Anyone who wants to try with me, here's an exercise.
1. The Ghost of Christmas Past - What present was your favorite to get as a child? Not a specific gift, but a type of gift, or maybe gifts from a certain person?
2. The Ghost of Christmas Present - What is one thing you love about Christmas? Not loved....love.
3. The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come - Name a tradition that that you would like to start—or restart—in the future.
All right...who else wants to play?
If you pick up the challenge please post a link to your answers as a comment to this post at http://www.dcroe.com/2005/12/making-christmas-bright.html.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
and as we were sitting in bed, i saw my Twin's entry (chris) and had to come write. mainly to say a big, fat
to everyone!! i've SEEN the pics of the boys. and damn if you don't want to sop them up with a dinner biscuit & eat them alive!! i love them two. some of the most handsome & sweetest kids on the planet (not forsaking my own beauties either...) i can't wait for my card! :)
back to the "exercise"...sweetie, here ya go.
1. Past - would have to be, not what i got, but how it was wrapped. you see, everyone (well, us kids everyone) got their toys from Santa. and each one of us not only got toys from Santa...but from Mrs. Claus, The Reindeer & The Elves. and not only did we get presents from all of them....we each got our own Santa Paper.
Santa Paper is extremely important...well now it is, but as a kid I couldn't see that for shit. my mother (whom i bash on more occasions than i care to count...but is truly a wonderful person) really tried to maintain that whole illusion for us as long as she could. each one of us (me, bubba & kat) would get santa/reindeery paper identical for the reindeer presents. santa/elfy paper identical for elf gifts.
but santa's gifts were special. each one got their own special paper that santa had picked out for them especially. and you kept that paper for years on end. how my mother managed to keep a stock pile of these specific kinds of paper has me boggled. even when we were all teens & well beyond the point of believing in the jolly old elf, she kept giving us our paper. and when asked about it, she simply replied, "i don't know what you're talking about."
funny how paper, although so insignificant on christmas morning, piled high, ripped, crinkled, used....can turn into such a powerful memory.
2. present - santa paper. all the above & trying to teach my wonderful darling how important it is...even though no one but me will appreciate it.
but perhaps one day, when they're older...they'll remember...like i remember....and pass it on.
3. yet to come - white christmas....for real. i've been dreaming about a white christmas for .... oh.....33 years now. and have yet to experience one.
we have plans to move back east next year. i hope it comes to pass. i really want a house. that i can put up a million twinkle lights on (like in Nat'l Lampoon's Christmas Vacation) and see real frost on my windows. the glitter of the lights off the snow. the angered face of my son shoveling the snow. the hurt look of my other son's face when he realizes that his brother 5 years his junior can shovel snow & he can merely make a ball.
so there you have it. and you know what babe?
i feel christmas coming on....
